Why Medical Fitness Matters
Seafarers work in an environment where fitness, vision, hearing and physical ability can directly affect safety. Medical fitness is therefore a professional requirement, not simply an admission formality.

Eyesight and Colour Vision
Deck and Engine roles can have different medical considerations. Eyesight and colour vision requirements should be checked against the current maritime medical standard applicable to the student's category and intended duties.

Hearing and Physical Fitness
Medical assessment can include hearing and overall physical ability, along with other health considerations relevant to safe work at sea. Students should answer medical questions honestly and provide the required records.

Use the Correct Maritime Medical Process
A general doctor's fitness certificate is not automatically the same as an approved maritime medical assessment. Students should use the appropriate approved medical practitioner and current procedure.

Do Not Wait Until the Last Minute
If a student has concerns about vision, colour perception, hearing or another condition that may affect eligibility, investigate early. Discovering a medical issue after paying substantial training fees can create unnecessary financial and emotional pressure.

Medical Does Not Guarantee Admission
Passing a medical assessment does not by itself guarantee admission, sponsorship or employment. It simply addresses one important part of the eligibility and fitness process.

What Parents Should Ask
Ask which medical standard applies, who is authorised to conduct the assessment, when the medical must be completed, what documents are needed and whether the institute has given you current written guidance.
